Mmk, I need your help please 🙂
So I’ve got my old laptop back up and running, with an eye to taking it out and about one of these days so I can go sit in coffee shops and restaurants and the like … I’m thinking that being mobile and being able to work anywhere will get me out the house a bit more and all the good things that go along with that!
Now then … what’s the best way for me to connect to the interwebz while I’m out and about?
I don’t want to be tied into any monthly contracts because this will all happen as and when I feel like it. There may be times where I’m out every day and there may be times when I’m chained to my desk. I really don’t know!
Also, I shall be doing the same thing with another 2 of our laptops here …
So, what’s your advice?
Both … but at the office is fine, that’s sorted.
Are yo looking for the laptops to be working at the office or out?
Hmmm … cool, thanks Saul.
Yeah, I think the phone connection is going to be fine for me, but probably not for the other 2 laptops – I’ll need to find another solution there …
My old laptop is *really* old – no Bluetooth 🙂
If you use your cellphone you can easily load a data bundle onto the phone thus lowering the costs. If however you to to Kulula Connect (or whatever their broadband wing is called) you can get 350 megs of data for R150 a month and the modem is chucked in for free. Problem is the 24 month contract so the cellphone data bundle might be cheaper. If you have Bluetooth you don’t even need a cable.
I don’t foresee any hectic uploading from the laptop off site, no …
There is another solution to this depending on if you want to do a lot of heavy file uploading or not. If not then the pnone as a modem will be fine. Other wise you buy a high speed dongle and just take out small data bundles for the month or not.
@Dad … thanks, I must still get my N95 back up running. I’ll do that this arvy.
@Chris … yes, thanks so much!
Hope my advice helped Sue, I’ll check that solution with telkom out for you, or we’ll do exactly what your father said and setup a connection via a USB dongle or so..
Yes. Just connect your phone via usb and start Nokia PC Suite. Find connect to the internet and it should happen automatically.
I am coming thru tomorrow so could help if you have a problem. All you would pay for is the extra data used.
Um, because I’m a dork and I don’t know about these things?
Does that happen via PC Suite?
Why don you connect via your N95. Not that fast but you only pay for the data you use. I use my N95 sometimes and it is fine.
Wouldn’t use it upload huge files though.
Oh you TROLL hahahaha 😀
My SP is … wait for it … Hellkom. They have this: http://www.telkom.co.za/attheoffice/services/lines/mobility/index.html
Do you think that’s the way to go? Seems not quite right though – still a monthly fee and possibly setup costs etc.
There must be an easier way …
Who is you’re service provider? You should contact them and find out if they provide the same kind of service.
MWeb sucks BTW.
Oh, I have a spare card here for a laptop if you want to use it to see if the solution works for you.
And you can take up war driving for fun and profit as it will get you out and about. I sometimes do that with my cell and you’d be amazed how many people and businesses don’t secure their wireless networks.
@BigFriendly Hey 🙂
I’m not with Mweb … bugger.
I have had a USB wifi adaptor installed (connect to a wireless LAN here)
Hi. If your ADSL is being provided by MWeb then you are able to use almost any WiFi hotspot for a limited time per month for free. Most coffee shops (hint hint) now have WiFi and you can use your MWeb profile to sign in. When I go to Jhb I spend a few hours every day in Vida e to do work stuff and I just log in and do email and any work required.
You will need to buy a WiFi network card if your laptop doesn’t have it built in.
You can also go and sit at the airport as they have WiFi hotspots, but that’s not much fun.
